Bringing the Bacon Back to Old Green Bay

Green Bay Packers

Yesterday, the Packers returned from Dallas, bringing with them the Vince Lombardi trophy.

They were greeted by fans, who lined the route—five or six people deep on both sides of the street—from Austin Straubel Airport back to Lambeau Field.

The Packers are holding a "Return to Titletown" rally today at Lambeau Field. The event quickly sold out, as 50,000 tickets were snapped up in a matter of hours.

I'm reminded of this picture from 1936, showing the mob of fans who came out to greet their World Champion Packers as they returned from New York City, where they defeated the Boston Redskins 21-6 at the Polo Grounds to seize their fourth title.

Back then, the Lumberjack Band would have been there to rally the crowd with the team's fight song, Go! You Packers! Go!

Hail, hail the gang's all here to yell for you,
And keep you going in your winning ways,
Hail, hail the gang's all here to tell you too,
That win or lose, we'll always sing your praises, Packers;

Go, you Packers, go and get 'em,
Go, you fighting fools upset 'em,
Smash their line with all your might,
A touchdown, Packers, Fight, Fight, Fight, Fight!
On, you Green and Gold, to glory,
Win this game, the same old story,
Fight, you Packers, Fight, Fight, Fight!
And bring the bacon home to Old Green Bay.

Enjoy your party, fellas. The 1936 club would be proud.

of course, the original lyrics to the Packers fight song had "blue and gold" as the team colors because that's what they originally were.

what a great Super Bowl win for the Packers, and only in Green Bay will you see the stadium sell out immediately even when there is not a game being played. that is a perfect example of what is so special about the Green Bay Packers. no other team inspires that kind of loyalty and dedication from its fans, win or lose, since 1919.
